She is Born

By | January 28, 2021

God so loved his creation, he took Adam’s rib
and made Eve. She carried Adam’s open wound
And born nations of sin. Plus
One blameless king. Is that all?

Hush. Don’t let pride take over her heart.
Quick. Teach her a proper song of shame.

She was born, not a he.
What a shame!

Better. Much better.
Let the shame rule over her.
Let the blood terrify her.
Let her feather dull and make her forget
Power, she has power.

Tell her she’s beautiful.
Tell her she is smart.
Tell her she is free to be whoever she chooses to be. But don’t forget –

She was born, not a he.
What a shame!

Sell her America.
Don’t mention settler colonialism.
Call it “American Dream”.
Sell her that.

Invite her to celebrate the symbolic reparation.
We’ve made progress!
First black female vice president.
Sell her that. But don’t forget –

She was born, not a he.
What a shame!

Ouch. Did I go too far? The truth
too hot to bear. Before you give me one “but”
I say: No.
No. No. You’ve got to hear. Better yet,
Join us to write a new song. One
Where everyone can hum along-

She is born!
She is born!
She is born!

Dear daughters, remember who you are.
You have authority and power. Own
Your voice. Believe in your gift. Roar.
We need you and only what you can
Give birth to.

Now, your turn, any thoughts? I care to know.
