Have you heard of the story where a donkey died staring at a bucket of water and a pile of hay? Let me tell you.
The donkey couldn’t decide whether to drink the water first or to eat the hay first so he stood there and died.
It seems like the story is telling me to do something instead of thinking my way to death. “Don’t be stupid”, the story shouts in my face, “Eat the hay and then drink the water.” Simple like that.
No donkey in the vast long history of donkey-hood has figured out a way to not eat or drink. Water and hay seem like the only good options. The one donkey who thought himself to death is a hero.
Is he?
No, no, no. Indecisions are decisions. Avoidance is not courage. Perhaps some smart actions are encouraged. Perhaps I know what to do.
Do I?
Ah. I am the donkey.
